Couples Therapy / Counselling is a process that aims to provide couples, married or not, with a neutral space in which to reflect on their relationships with the help of an impartial, trained outsider. The experience should allow each party an opportunity to air their feelings and thoughts and enable them to begin to appreciate the dynamics involved in their relationships more completely. Learning to communicate effectively and negotiate their needs more skilfully is a common outcome of the process, as is learning to deal appropriately with your immediate problems and finding better ways of relating in general.
Couples therapy / counselling usually takes place weekly and sessions are typically 90min each. The process can be short term (e.g. 12 sessions) and may help you weather a crisis. Or, you may need to attend for several months, particularly if your relationship has deteriorated over a long period of time.
