Your child will choose from a selection of toys and play materials. These include things like paper and coloured pens and pencils, small figures, animals, and soft toys. They use these to create games, which I watch carefully to see how they express the child’s feelings, fears, and fantasies. I then put what I understand by the play into words. Most children will then clearly indicate if they feel understood or not. The method thus allows your child to express him or herself without having to provide verbal explanations.
