It is much more challenging to try and work on a relationship when only one partner is prepared to go to therapy. However, it may still be worthwhile to attend sessions since you can benefit from learning about your own reactions and behaviour in the relationship. I realise that it is not always easy to believe, but I can assure you that when you change, your relationship dynamic will too. One partner’s growing awareness of their dynamics and how these play out in the relationship will often result in subtle shifts in their behaviour which in turn affect the behaviour of their partners. Something as simple as no longer feeling the need to fight about how tidy the house is or isn’t can have a profound impact on the quality of a couple’s time together.
